Abstract
This is Volume 29A in the Anchor Bible series of new book-by-book translations of the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha, each by a prominent scholar. Both the present volume (JOHN XIII-XII) and Volume 29 (JOHN I-XII) are by Raymond E. Brown, S.S., Professor of Biblical Studies at Union Theological Seminary and Woodstock College, New York City.
In this volume Father Brown continues and concludes his study of the Gospel begun in Volume 29 (JOHN I-XII). In the NOTES and COMMENT he investigates both the composition of the Gospel text and its meaning. The theories advanced by scholars of all backgrounds are weighted and evaluated in the light of modern biblical principles. In sum, what is attempted here is a synthesis of the major scholarly insights that bear on the Fourth Gospel.
The translation – as Father Brown sates – strives not for any formal beauty but rather for an accurate and contemporary version: “The simple, everyday Greek of the Gospel has been rendered into the ordinary American English of today.” The result is a translation that will strike the reader with uncommon immediacy.
The chapters of the Gospel translated here (xiii-xxi) comprise the Book of Glory (describing the Last Supper, the Passion, and the appearances of the Risen Jesus) and the Epilogue. Following these are two appendixes; one on the Paraclete and, for reference purposes, the other including the text of Chapters I-XII from Volume 29. There are also two indexes, one of authors, the other of subjects, which cover the entire Gospel. Volume 30 is to contain the three Epistles of John.
