Abstract
We have reached a crisis. Some would apocalyptically term it an 'end time', while others, unwilling to abandon all hope, would see it as a time of transition.
This is the starting point for Hans Kung's powerful new work. It looks at the end of the 'modern' period, dominated by technological advance and its new word 'progress', and the roots of a new era which he calls 'post-modern'.
It is difficult to grasp and comprehend the meaning of this new era; in fact it seems often to be characterised by wilful obscurity. But Kung is convinced that the diagnosis and solution of the religious crisis of our day will advance our understanding of the wider issues.
Religion and, more specifically, the Church, can choose one of two ways. Either it can participate in a Counter-Enlightenment, retreating into dogma and bureaucracy, or it can witness in a way that is both intellectually satisfying and spiritually consoling.
Hans Kung's book, the result of thirty years of teaching and reflection, is a vital text for the years ahead.
